Student visas look complicated, but the underlying structure is similar across most countries.
The four pillars
Every student visa application rests on four types of evidence:
- Admission — an official letter from a recognized institution
- Funding — proof you can pay for tuition and living costs
- Intent — a clear statement of why you're studying this course
- Compliance — health, character, biometrics, and background documents
Common documents
- Valid passport
- Admission letter / I-20 / CAS / CoE
- Proof of funds
- Academic transcripts
- English test scores
- Statement of Purpose
Timelines
Visa processing varies widely. US F-1 interviews can be booked within days. Canadian study permits may take 4–12 weeks. UK Student Route decisions are typically within 3 weeks.
